On our way to a paperless cockpit with Lufthansa Systems

Integrating on-board and ground services

For many years, airlines and their flight crew have been working to reduce the amount of paper in the cockpit.  Therefore electronic take-off performance applications as well as electronic route and airport charts have been developed.  With a growing number of available applications and the need for integrated EFB solutions has become increasingly urgent.  But in orderto convert an airline's existing flight operation processes into integrated ditigital processes, focusing on paperless flying is not sufficient.  Only an integrated overall concept that brings pre-flight,in-flight and post-flight as well as on-board and ground services together can exploit the full potential.  This is achieved by Lufthansa Systems' Lido eFlightBag, an Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) solution that provides cockpit crews with an electronic information management system throughout the entire flight process.  It integrates our Lido eRouteManual electronic charting application, electronic briefing package solution, flight deck document management application, take-off performance solutions, among others.

One solution for the enire fleet

Lido eFlightBag is designed especially for the use by commercial airlines.  It optimizes information processes in the cockpit and meets the strict requirements for information quality and processing speed.  One of the highlights of our solution is that it is independent of EFB hardware devices and airframe OEMs.  This is especially important for commercial airlines that operate mixed fleets.  Moreover, our solution is ultimatley flexible: Lido eFlightBag can run as a class 1 solution on notebooks, it can be permanently installed in the cockpit as a Class 2 solution or integrated with a Class 3 on-board information solution.

Features required for commercial airline operations

Lido eFlightBag fully replaces the pilot's flight bag which is completley packed with paper documents.  It optimizes information process in the cockpit and reduces costs by ensuring that current operational data is always available for calculations and by eliminating the printing and logistics efforts involved in updating paper-based documents.

Examples of the applications that Lido eFlightBag includes:

  • The electronic Flight Folder (EFF) bundles all flight-related data and documents in a standardized structure.
  • The Library Document Viewer facilitates the electronic display of general operations manuals and all other flight-specific documents.
  • With the Lido eRouteManual electronic navigation charts pilots can see all relevant flight  information at a glance.  Charts can be opened, marked and handled just like paper.
  • Lido Topas (take-off Performance Analysis) calculates optimal take-off settings while taking all relevant factors into account, including obstacle data and EOSIDs.
  • EFOM (Electronic Flight Operations Manual) is a powerful tool for managing, authoring, and publishing structured XML data.

Lufthansa Systems is your partner

The introduction of an EFB not only influences the flight deck but also the ground IT and operations.  Process changes in both areas have to be considered and the integration of theonboard EFB system into the airline's ground infrastructure often leads to additional requirements.  With our flexible Lido eFlightBag, we provide one of the industry's foremost EFB solutions and offer commercial airlines a full product and service portfolio.  For sure, Lufthansa Systems will further drive and react to customer and market demands for Electronic Flight Bags and continue to play a strong and active role in this developing market.

Lufthansa Systems is one of the leading IT services providers for the ailirne and aviation industries worldwide.  We provide continual IT support to its customers - from the development of systems to their implementations, operation and maintenance.  Our portfolio covers all of an airline's business processes, including planning, passenger and cargo management, finance, flight operations, and aircraft maintenance.  For further information, see www.lhsystems.com.
