Global Data Automation from Aircraft to Back Office

Since 1964, Teledyne Controls has helped aircraft operators increase flight safety and gain operational efficiency through innovative solutions designed to enhance aircraft data and information management.

A technology leader in ground wireless communications

A pioneer in ground wireless communication, Teledyne Controls introduced cellular technology more than 10 years ago as a viable means to transfer large volumes of data between the aircraft and the airline’s ground network. Since then, the company has been designing innovative wireless data transfer systems that integrate cellular and/or 802.11 WiFi technologies and provide secure and reliable links to move data on and off the aircraft.

Faster wireless transfers of large volumes of data

Teledyne’s latest innovation, the Wireless GroundLink® Comm+ (WGL Comm+™) system, is an enhanced version of the popular Wireless GroundLink® Quick Access Recorder (WQAR), which has been in commercial service at 120 operators’ worldwide for over a decade. The WGL Comm+ solution offers unparalleled capability in automatic data exchange, leveraging 3G and 4G cellular technology to facilitate and accelerate data transfers between aircraft end-systems and ground-based equipment. The new system also uses multiple channels of cellular high speed data, which provides faster wireless transfers of large volumes of data. With increased performance, the WGL Comm+ system can support additional applications that require more bandwidth and deliver efficiency improvements for numerous applications that rely on aircraft connectivity while the aircraft is on the ground.

Automated wireless data transfers to support multiple applications

Traditionally Teledyne’s WQAR has been used to enable complete data automation for Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) and Maintenance applications, serving as the core component of Teledyne’s end-to-end flight data retrieval and analysis system, now known as WGL-Flight Data™. With the new WGL Comm+™ system, operators can maximize their investment and leverage it to support other applications. These applications include Teledyne’s WGL-Dataloading™, a seamless system designed toautomate the distribution of avionics software parts and navigation databases across an entire fleet of aircraft with the press of a button. This solution enables operators to transition from manual distribution based on floppy disks, CDs and paper-based methods, to a paperless and automatic distribution process. Another application is the WGL-Router™, which can be used to transfer content & data to EFBs and Ethernet-based devices. The WGL Comm+ system will also support in the near future a WGL-Fi™ capability providing content transfer and data communicationover an onboard wireless hotspot for WiFi enabled EFBs, iPads, tablets and other Flight Operations computersOther applications include the WGL-AID™function which provides EFBs, including iPads and tablets, with access to airplane parameter data; as well as the ACARS over WGL™ function to send and receive information while airborne via ACARS.

Teledyne’s latest solutions truly automate fleet-wide uploading and downloading of data between operator’s back office server-based applications and avionics systems on the aircraft, reducing workload and ensuring on board systems are kept up to date. This enables fleets of aircraft to operate more intelligently, resulting in improved aircraft availability, enhanced safety and compliance, and reduced fuel costs, thus improving overall operational efficiencies for the operator.
