The Power of Data – Global Data Automation from Aircraft to Back Office

At Teledyne Controls, we built our name on intelligent solutions that collect, manage and deliver aircraft data more efficiently. Our innovative technology and collaborative customer relationships have revolutionized the way aircraft operators access, manage and utilize their data, helping them achieve higher goals in safety, performance and efficiency.

A technology leader in ground wireless communications

A pioneer in ground wireless communication, Teledyne Controls introduced cellular technology more than 12 years ago as a viable means to transfer large volumes of data between the aircraft and the airline’s ground network. Since then, the company has designed innovative wireless data transfer systems that integrate cellular and/or 802.11 WiFi technologies and provide secure and reliable links to move data on and off the aircraft.

Faster wireless transfers of large volumes of data

Teledyne’s latest innovation, the wireless GroundLink® Comm+ system, is an enhanced version of the popular GroundLink® Wireless Quick Access Recorder (WQAR), which has been in commercial service at airlines worldwide for over a decade. The GroundLink® Comm+ solution offers unparalleled capability in automatic data exchange, leveraging 3G and 4G cellular technology to facilitate and accelerate data transfers between aircraft end-systems and ground-based equipment. The new system also uses multiple channels of cellular high speed data, which provides faster wireless transfers of large volumes of data. With increased performance, the GroundLink® Comm+ system can support additional applications that require more bandwidth and deliver efficiency improvements for numerous applications that rely on aircraft connectivity while the aircraft is on the ground.

Automated wireless data transfers to support multiple applications

Traditionally Teledyne’s WQAR has been used to enable complete data automation for Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) and Maintenance applications, serving as the core component of Teledyne’s end-to-end flight data retrieval and analysis system, now known as GroundLink® Flight Data. With the new GroundLink® Comm+ system, operators can maximize their investment and leverage it to support other applications such as:

– GroundLink® Dataloading,a seamless system designed to automate the distribution of avionics software parts and navigation databases across an entire fleet of aircraft with the press of a button. This solution enables operators to transition from manual distribution based on floppy disks, CDs and paper-based methods, to a paperless and automatic distribution process.

– GroundLink® AID+ which enhances EFB systems functionality by adding off board connectivity, access to aircraft parameters and data management capability to EFBs and crew devices, without the need for additional hardware. A WiFi option is available to extend the AID+ functionality to WiFi enabled devices.

– ACARS over GroundLink® which provides IP connectivity, at cellular data cost, to send AOC and ACC ACARS traffic while the aircraft is on the ground.

Teledyne’s latest solutions truly automate fleet-wide uploading and downloading of data between operator’s back office server-based applications and avionics systems on the aircraft, reducing workload and ensuring on board systems are kept up to date. This enables fleets of aircraft to operate more intelligently, resulting in improved aircraft availability, enhanced safety and compliance, and reduced fuel costs, thus improving overall operational efficiencies for the operator.
